Anything outside the realm of gadets they typical don't know wtf they are talking about, unless the entire article is just quoting and paraphrasing another source. I can't speak for, or defend, the rest of the Gawker-verse, I only sometimes jump elsewhere when a featured story headline catches my eye on the Jalop front page.

Well that was interesting . Some of the stuff we see on Gawker media is questionable, and perhaps sometimes illegal, but I don't know enough about it or the people who run the network to say much. I don't think Reddit can be held up as some sort of example, either, but as a community it's clear that they're a force to be reckoned with.

What I do know, however, that every time someone ends their post with "I'm a Navy Seal and I'll kill you like a fucking ninja," I just get disappointed.

It might be true that you're a Navy Seal, and maybe you do have a secret network of spies (uh, formerly secret, 'cause you just told the Internet about it), and maybe you are the fucking bomb, but it just sounds like childish dick measuring.

You know what? You don't need to convince us that you're tough, 'cause you just sent us a 4000-word essay with 200 different links for our consideration. I don't post on Gawker and only occasionally venture into comments (and I always — always — regret it). There are definitely some smart, clever human beings that comment on that site, but they're buried in a tsunami of idiocy. I suppose part of the problem is that Gawker is basically just about gossip, sensational/trashy news, and posts designed purely to generate outrage. So there isn't really anything substantial uniting the commenters, just a shared love of garbage combined with boredom and idle hands. Not the best combination.

The reality is, a lot of it isn't far off.

Gawker is a drain plug of society - all they do is hate republicans, love democrats, accuse people of being insensitive to gays, etc etc. They live to sensationalize the most mundane news and the core commenting crowd think they actually make a difference in politics because 250 people starred a comment saying "gunz should be banned because they scare me."

Look at the article about the representative who told the reporter he'd throw him over the balcony. It was typical macho arrogance "you're not man enough, I'll break you in half...like a boy." Whatever, it's typical macho fight talk. But nooooo, gawker somehow is trying to make it seem like it was some homophobic fight talk. They really work hard to make this stuff up and their commentariat just eats it up.

Gawker is full of lefty extremists, Jez full of feminists, etc. Jalopnik is just cars. White black, gay, straight, republican, democrat, whatever. If you like cars, you're welcome to hang out. No threats of violence, name-calling, etc. At least not as much as on Gawker.
